Belgium Film maker ALEXIS DESTOOP and writer AARON SCHUSTER were residents at the Art Exchange on several occasions throughout 2009

Alexis brought a crew to Broken Hill to produce the film Kairos. Kairos is a Belgian – Australia co - production. Primary funding for Kairos is provided by the FilmLab Department of the Flemish Audiovisual Funds (VAF), and the Visual Arts Board of the Australia Council. Additional partners in Belgium are Kunstencentrum Buda (Kortrijk) and Vooruit (Ghent).  In France, Kairos is supported by Le Fresney Studio national des arts contemporains (Tourcoing). The co – production partners in Australia are dLuxMedia Arts (Sydney) and Broken Hill Art Exchange Inc. (Broken Hill).

The Art Exchange assisted with site locations, props, fundraising, acting extras and provided accommodation at the residency for the crews. During Alexis’s time in Broken Hill he also conducted a workshop with Theatre 44 in Broken Hill arranged by the Broken Hill Art Exchange Inc. KAIROS is a project for film by Alexis Destoop in collaboration with Aaron Schuster.

Kairos was a project initiated by Alexis Destoop, who lives & works in/between Sydney & Brussels. The project originates with his fascination & curiousity for the space of the australian Outback, and the desire to to appropriate it while displacing, "re-signifying", the particular social, political & historical history into a larger -read: universal- discourse. The Kairos project will result in a science fiction film set in a temporally uncertain future.

An original scorefor Kairos will be created by experimental musicians Stephen O’Malley and Oren Ambarchi. Their musical technique is often described as “sculpting sound.” Sound is a crucial element of the film. The role and importance of music lies in representing the immaterial problem of time, and giving a dramatic sense to the opposition of different temporalities, especially the phenomenon of desynchronization.
